Liam tucked his prosthetic behind his back and leaned his shoulder against the gate to the field.

Cami was right there.

A dozen steps and he could sweep her into his arms.

Spin her off her feet.

Kiss her congratulations.

But he couldn’t do any of those things.

Not yet.

Her hesitant wave told him everything he needed to know.

He’d had a delusional minute when the team lined up in the wrong positions. Cami had implemented his findings into her game strategy. He recognized the fruits of his work with them: Jamal’s confidence, Hunter’s leadership, Owen’s courage.

If she trusted him enough to use what he’d learned about the team, maybe she’d trust him enough to let him closer to her.

As much as he wanted to, he didn’t know the details that made her who she was. She refused to take his tests, have an open conversation, or imagine a world where she could rely on anyone else.

And there in lay the rub that rooted his feet in their spot. Any display of affection or appreciation or encouragement wouldn’t be well received. She’d bristle again. She’d list the reasons she told herself were good enough to keep them apart.

Some were valid, but most were excuses. He needed to prove it.
